Both "broad" and "abstract" mean not specific.

Both "short-term" and "temporary" mean not lasting very long.

Both "metaphor" and "analogy" refer to a comparison between things.

Both "forbid" and "prohibit" mean to not allow.

Both "developing" and "ongoing" mean that something has not stopped.

Both "model" and "norm" refer to something that is standard.

If the economy is bad, people's livelihood is suffering as well. Usually the capital of a country is one of its wealthiest cities. But in the sentence, even poverty is a usual sight, or the norm, in the capital. That shows that the nation's economy is really in bad shape.

Law enforcement units usually do not give up until the person responsible is identified. Therefore, unless someone has been put under arrest, police investigation does not stop and remains ongoing.

What is love? What is hate? We all feel like we know these feelings, but no one can give perfect definitions. The reason is that these two concepts are broad, or abstract.

When there is a natural disaster that makes people homeless, the government sets up temporary housing facilities (= housing units that will not exist for a long time). Then the people affected by the disaster move in and stay there for weeks or months until the authorities have helped them find new homes.

The brain is probably the most mysterious part of our body. For ease of explanation, many scientists make a comparison between the brain and the computer (= The computer is used as an analogy for the brain.). Both are in charge of handling information and doing complex tasks with it.

We all know that smoking is bad for our health. But not only smokers are subject to serious health concerns, people around them also are. To prevent passive smoking from occurring in the workplace, it has become a norm that employers do not allow, or prohibit, indoor smoking.
